Research Analyst
As a Senior Research Analyst at the Plakhov Group, Thomas is currently working on Quick Takes, Podcast Summaries, and Event Reports. As the Team Europe Lead, he leads a group of research analysts on Europe, Russia, and the Caucasus.
Thomas has a master's degree in European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies and a bachelor's degree in Political Science and English. His master's thesis tests eight hypotheses on why Ukraine is pushing for the legalization of same-sex civil partnerships following Russia's 2022 invasion by conducting an internet investigation and coding different types of sources from different parts of Ukrainian society. Thomas has presented his research on the changing discourse on the LGBTQIA+ community at New York University's Jordan Centre Research Symposium, Carleton University's Communication Graduate Caucus Conference, and Carleton University and the University of Ottawa's FIST & IFGS Grad Conference.
He has also taught a workshop for high school students titled “A Brief Introduction to the War in Ukraine.” His broad research interests also led him to present a paper regarding Ukrainian anti-corruption measures and the Copenhagen Criteria at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Centre for Slavic, Eurasian and Eastern European Studies’ Emerging Scholars Workshop on the Study of Challenges in Eurasian Politics and Society. He was also a research assistant for the Eastern Europe and Transatlantic Network, working on security issues regarding Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
He has high intermediate Ukrainian and basic French.
